The Collins

In 1860, John S. Collins established Collins' Nurseries on Pleasant Valley Avenue, growing what became the largest commercial horticultural operation in the state of New Jersey. His nurseries shipped trees and ornamental plants up and down the East Coast, integrating Moorestown's farms into a regional commercial network that reached from Burlington County to Boston. Collins did not stop at one enterprise. He built a lumber and coal yard on Mill Street that expanded to branches in five New Jersey towns. His son Irving ran the lumber operations. A descendant, Lester Collins, was managing three family farms by the age of seventeen and went on to produce more fruit than any other grower in the state. The Collins family built their success the same way they grew their nurseries: through specialized knowledge, focused effort, and the discipline to manage multiple ventures from a single base. Moorestown's quiet reputation as one of New Jersey's most knowledgeable horticultural communities traces directly back to their soil.
